Résumé

This article studies the realistic depiction of war in The Red Badge of Courage (1895), All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) and A Rumor of War (1977) to show how war is absurd and destructive for the humanity. While some authors used to glorify the idea of warfare, Crane, Remarque, and Caputo choose to portray it realistically, showing the dehumanization, the deaths, the suffering of soldiers, the psychological devastation of soldiers, etc. The analysis is based on a comparative approach that enables a scrutiny of the realistic description of war. It shows that the authors describe the true life of soldiers in war in contrast with the romanticists who depict it as heroic, and glorious. This article studies the novels to illustrate that war is truthfully portrayed by the authors of our focus who endeavor to disclose its atrocious and damaging effects.
